If you happen to be in Liguria, you can’t miss a day trip to one of its jems: the Cinque Terre.
The Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a section of the coast in Liguria. It comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore.
Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost of the Five Lands, and the biggest of them. Its main attractions are: the Convent of St. Francis; the Statue of Neptune, known also as the Statue of the Giant; the Tower “Aurora”.
Going from west to east, we find Vernazza, whose main features are its colorful houses, scattered around the little port. The main attractions are: the Church of S. Maria di Antiochia; the Castle Doria; Belforte Bastion.
After Vernazza, our journey takes us to Corniglia, the tiniest of the Five Lands, the only one without a port. Corniglia can be reached only by train or walking. The main attractions that Corniglia offers are: the curch of St. Peter; the Chapel of the “flagellanti”; the ruins of the fortresses.
Leaving Corniglia behind, we get to Manarola, with its bell tower; the castle (now a private house); Punta Bonfiglio and the Belvedere.
Last but not least, the easternmost of the Five Lands, Riomaggiore. There, one can visit the Church of S. Giovanni Battista; the church of S. Antonio, the oldest church in town; the castle of Riomaggiore and the Bastion.
Each of the Five Lands can be reached either by train or boat (according to weather conditions), or by walking along the pathways that connect one Land to the other.
