Your trip in Sicily
Sicily has always intrigued artists, writers and, last but not least, filmmakers, for its art, history and landscapes.
For example, if you happen to be a fan of The Godfather, you can’t miss the chance to visit Savoca, Forza d’Agrò and Fiumefreddo.
Savoca is a little beautiful village – so beautiful that it is part of the association “I più bei borghi d’Italia” (Italy’s most beautiful villages). It is mostly known for the mummies found in the crypt of the Capuchin Convent. In Savoca, you can recognize the Bar Vitelli – still run by the family -, where Michael meets Apollonia’s father and asks his permission to court her; or the Church of Santa Lucia, where the wedding took place.
Forza d’Agrò is another beautiful little village. It is situated on a hilltop, from which it is possible to admire the coast and the outline of Mount Etna. In Forza d’Agrò you can easily recognize the Cathedral and the historic center, that appear as a background in various scenes of the movie.
In Fiumefreddo, you can stop at the Castello degli Schiavi (Slaves’ Castle), wheree various scenes of the movie were filmed, like the explosion of the car after the wedding. The castle owes its name to the two statues of Turks on the loggia, put there to remember a failed assault by Turkish pirates. The two statues seem to look at the sea, like they were waiting for their comrades to come and rescue them, hence the name “Slave’s Castle”.
So… what are you waiting for? Leave the gun, take the cannoli.
