1. Encounter the Greek Theatre

Set in the heart of Taormina and peering out over the beautiful coastline of north-east Sicily, the acient Greek theatre is one of the prized fixtures of the town of Taormina. The striking architecture and large spectator arena is breath-taking, and despite being over 2,000 years old, the theatre still hosts annual performances, continuing Taormina’s ancient tradition.

2. Indulge in Taormina’s glorious coastline

Travelling down the hill from the centre of Taormina will see you arrive at the town’s beautiful and inviting coastline. There are many great beaches in easy reach of the town, including Mazzaro Bay and Isola Bella. The latter is considered one of the most spectacular beaches on the island of Sicily and is well worth a day or two of your break in Taormina.

3. Discover the Cathedral of Taormina

Wandering around Taormina on foot is one of the best ways to discover its hidden gems and charm. One of the more obvious landmarks you’ll encounter while exploring the town is the Cathedral of Taormina. Located in Piazza Duomo, the cathedral has stood for over 600 years and is one of the town’s most interesting landmarks.

4. Duck into authentic shops and eateries

Whether it’s a little gelato stand, a colourful souvenir shop or a hidden, aromatic eatery; wandering the narrow and winding streets of Taormina will see you encounter numerous charming and authentic shops and restaurants. If you’re looking for some ideal souvenirs to take back to friends and family back home, stroll through Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and along Via Teatro Greco towards the Greek Theatre – this area is bursting with great little shops.

5. Take an excursion to Mount Etna

Taormina’s location ensures it is ideal for exploring some more of Sicily’s highlights. The interesting city of Catania lies just to the south of Taormina, though it is the towering and striking Mont Etna that is likely to draw your attention. Smouldering away in the background, a visit to one of the world’s most active volcanoes is a must for anybody on holiday in Taormina.
