The city of Salerno is considered the gateway to the Amalfi Coast; it is located on the Gulf of Salerno.
Salerno is part of a Tourist Triangle together with Pompeii, Positano and Paestum. Since the medieval era Salerno has been a hub of culture, art and learning. The world’s first school of medicine was opened in Salerno. It is a modern city but has a medieval old town built around the harbor at the foot of Castello di Arechi, a castle 300 meters above the city which hosts exhibitions and offers brilliant views.
At the foot of the hill is the Giardino della Minerva, with a Health Garden that was Europe’s first botanical garden. Salerno has several ornate palaces including the town hall and Palazzo Pinto which houses the province’s art gallery. See the Duomo with its crypt that holds the tomb of St. Matthew; the 14th century Chiesa della SS. Annunziata with a bell tower designed by Ferdinando Sanfelice and the Chiesa di San Giorgio with its frescoes by Francesco and Angelo Solimena. Salerno museums include the Provincial Archaeological Museum; the Museum of the Salernitan Medical School housed and the Museum of Religious Art in the Duomo.
